A recap; Island Moving Company makes strides to promote dance

Last Friday's performance of Island Moving Companys Great Friends New York brought a respectable sized audience to Manhattan Movement and Arts Center. Patrons from Newport, RI and New York City came to show their support for IMC, Janusphere Dance Company, Cherylyn Lavagnino Dance, and John Mark Owen. Highlighting the work of 5 choreographers, Great Friends New York demonstrated the strength of working as a community. The evenings success rested in the potential of companies supporting each other; providing moments of good dancing and room for growth.

In conclusion, a group of motivated dancers, choreographers, and arts administrators had the unique opportunity to expand their audiences and hone their creative abilities. IMCs title for their 2011 season Architecture in Motion illustrates the process of dance; a constantly evolving being, which can convey beauty and human emotions. This is an example to small dance companies all over the world. Working together will make dance stronger and more accessible.

IMCs executive director Dominique Alfandre announced this seasons partner company. Pasadena Dance Theatre, a California based ballet company lead by Artistic Director Cynthia Young, will join IMC this summer for two weeks of creation and inspiration. Then, in the spring of 2012, IMC will travel to California to further the collaboration.

A platform for dancers and choreographers to interact with each other and present work to new audiences is a priceless commodity for a dance company. Showcasing new work is a brave endeavor for a choreographer, as a part of the individual gets absorbed into the piece. Hence, it is crucial to have a strong creative support system.
